Me...for saving you countless hours of workout Garbage Time. I’m fairly certain you’ve never heard the word Garbage Time and to be honest, neither have I. Because this is a blog and I can say anything I want let’s just pretend Garbage Time is simply wasted time...which is where the whole KISSing thing comes in.
An old Army Sergeant told me once; “if you want to win you’ve got to Keep It Simple Stupid”. I thought he added the “stupid” in reference to me. Turns out it’s a widely known acronym.
Blah...blah...blah...how does it relate to fitness? Well, simply put, the fitness industry is a confusing place to browse. The amount of contradicting information your brain takes in and the amount of time we spend trying to sift through it all is staggering and will lead you down a path towards Garbage Time.
Here’s the golden nugget for today...all of that garbage you’re hearing and reading...you only need to know about 10% of it!
This whole thing about not eating after 8pm. Craziness. This little tidbit of useless knowledge should be banished from your brain for good. As long as you’re eating healthy meals consistently throughout the day you will lose weight.
There are very few of us that are at such an elite level that we need to worry about eating 15 grams of protein within half an hour of completing our workout for best muscle growth. Yes, this is recommended, but is it required for your weight loss/toning regimen to be effective? No! Instead, plan your meals with protein intake in mind and try to shoot for 46 grams per day (average women) and 56 grams per day (average man).
“Free weights are better”...”bands are better”...”the TRX is a must”...”machines are what you should use for maximum benefit”. How many times have you heard one of these comments? In the spirit of KISS, my recommendation is to use anything you damn well want and feel comfortable and safe using. Don’t run out and buy a physioball simply because you read somewhere that you need to work your core by balancing on the ball while doing strengthening exercises. I don’t care if you’re using soup cans or your child for weights. As long as you’re up and raising your heart rate for 20 minutes while simultaneously trying to defeat gravity using a variety of muscle groups.
My point is simply that unless you’re down around 8-10% body fat and desperately trying to lose those last 3-5lbs your two main objectives should simply be; 1. Find a variety of fitness exercises you enjoy doing and cycle between them consistently (5-6 days per week for 25 minutes or more each session); and 2. Focus on eating healthy, well balanced meals consistently throughout the day.
So, do away with the Garbage Time trying to figure out whose advice is right and whose advice is wrong and simply KISS.

Inspiration compels us to accomplish the seemingly impossible
Inspiration makes us willing to tear down the walls of our comfort zones. Be inspired every day”
